www.deutsche-guggenheim-berlin.de - DEUTSCHE GUGGENHEIM - Based on the private collection of Solomon R. Guggenheim with its focus on "non-objective" art. Today it comprises a worldwide network of museums and cultural partnerships. The exhibition space hosts three to four important exhibitions each year, many of which showcase a work specially commissioned by a single artist.

www.modernamuseet.se - MODERNA MUSEET, STOCKHOLM - Moderna museet's collection includes around 5 000 paintings, sculptures and installations, around 25 000 water colours, drawings and graphic sheets, and around 100 000 photographs. Including well-known works by Kandinsky, Matise and Brancusi. (Reopening in February 2004).

www.nal.vam.ac.uk - NATIONAL ART LIBRARY, LONDON - The NAL is both a major reference library and the Victoria and Albert Museum's curatorial department for the art, craft and design of the book. The Library's fundamental strength lies in the range and depth of its holdings of documentary material concerning the fine and decorative arts, from many countries and periods.

www.ngprague.cz - NATIONAL GALLERY, PRAGUE - Based in several locations across the city, the best being at Veletrzni Palace which houses a collection of 19th, 20th and 21st century Czech art alongside the work of other European artists. Its presentation of work from the years 1910-1914 supports the distinctive Czech contribution to cubist expression.

www.palazzograssi.it - PALAZZO GRASSI, VENICE - Fiat's cultural institution in Venice The Palazzo Grassi has been completely renovated and remodelled to house an efficient space for cultural encounters. It has hosted wide ranging exhibitions that cover a broad spectrum from Futurism, surealism and expressionism to the art of Ancient Civilisations.

www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk - THE SAATCHI GALLERY - Presenting work by largley unseen young artists or by established international artists whoose work has been rarely or never exhibited in the UK. The gallery operates as a springboard for young artists to launch there careers.

www.secession.at - SECESSION, VIENNA - The Secession is the world's oldest independent gallery devoted entirely to exhibitions of contemporary art. The basic objective is the presentation of current developments in Austrian and international art, as well an to cultivate an openness for experimentation.

www.stedelijk.nl - STEDELIJK, AMSTERDAM - "It was a quiet, civilised museum for the Amsterdam bourgeoisie in a time when there was nothing as troublesome as modern art,". The Stedelijk now holds a vast collection of works by artists from the begining of the last centuray to the present day. Covering many schools and disciplines from CoBrA, Arte Povera and the Dutch Stijl artists to contemporary American artists like Judd, LeWitt and Nauman.

www.tate.org.uk - The Tate galleries house the national collection of British art from the sixteenth century to the present day, including the Turner Bequest, and the national collection of international modern art.

www.vam.ac.uk - V & A - The Victoria and Albert Museum is the National Museum of Art and Design. Its purpose is to enable everyone to enjoy its collections and explore the cultures that created them; and to inspire those who shape contemporary design.

www.ysp.co.uk - Yorkshire Sculpture Park. A vibrant, changing programme of exhibitions, displays and projects is held throughout 500 acres of eighteenth century landscaped grounds and in two indoor galleries. Oh and the restaurant's is pretty good too.

 

 
 
 
 

 

 

Music

www.dominorecordco.com - London based independent label and home to some of the best bands and music (oK, in my opinion) of the last 10 years - The Third Eye Foundation, Palace Brothers, Pavement, Clinic, Sebadoh, Clearlake, Movietone, The Pastels, Hood and some band called Arctic Monkeys.

www.fencerecords.com - Fife based label / fanzine /collective. Home to the fence collective, king creosote, U.P.N.O.C., H.M.S. Ginafore among many more.

www.geographicmusic.com - The superb domino affiliated label created by Stephen McRobbie aka Pastel. Artists include the fabulous Bill Wells, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, International airport, Future Pilot AKA and more. Producing some of my favorite music of the last couple of years, the 2002 compilation 'You Don't Need Darkness To Do What You Think Is Right' has to be played on almost a weekly basis.

www.internationalairport.co.uk - Glasgow based collective, playing a beautiful mixture of eclectic jazzy pop noises. Fronted by quiet voiced Tom Crossley who is sometimes in the pastels and Appendix out, the band also boasts appearances from Aggi and Katrina from the pastels. www.myspace.com/thepastels - Truly the best band in the world ever!! The Pastels are ledgendary round here (my house). I've travelled to some strange places to see them live (that village hall event near Stirling??) and also bumped into them accidentally on occaision at art /music events (ICA London). A hugely influential sound and an inspiring 'ramshakle' (their words) band ethic. Their part in the development of indie glasgow in the 1980s is key (53rd & 3rd label). The Vaselines, Shop Assistants, Jesus & Mary Chain, BMX bandits, Teenage Fanclub, Melody Dog are some of the many bands linked with early pastelism.

www.myspace.com/blueyates - Latin / flamenco influenced acoustic guitar player Blue Yates produces his own brand of crazy shtetl funk. Recent collaborations include Kerry Sanson (Cardiff), The Master Chaynjis (Bristol) and Andy Lunn from Zil (Leicester).
